{"id":3321,"date":"2013-03-03T17:57:56","date_gmt":"2013-03-03T06:57:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/michellecooper-writer.com\/blog\/?p=3321"},"modified":"2013-03-24T18:04:59","modified_gmt":"2013-03-24T07:04:59","slug":"miscellaneous-memoranda-6","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michellecooper-writer.com\/blog\/2013\/03\/miscellaneous-memoranda-6\/","title":{"rendered":"Miscellaneous Memoranda"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Otherwise known as, A List Of Things I Bookmarked Months Ago But Didn&#8217;t Ever Get Around To Posting On My Blog. <\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2013<\/strong> In January, the American Library Association announced the <a href=\"http:\/\/glbtrt.ala.org\/rainbowbooks\/archives\/1025\" title=\"American Library Association: 2013 Rainbow Books List\" target=\"_blank\">2013 Rainbow List<\/a> of LGBTQ<sup class='footnote'><a href='#fn-3321-1' id='fnref-3321-1' onclick='return fdfootnote_show(3321)'>1<\/a><\/sup> books for children &#038; teenagers. At the end of last year, YALSA also <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yalsa.ala.org\/thehub\/2012\/12\/27\/a-different-light-lgbtq-characters-on-2012-best-of-lists\/\" title=\"YALSA: LGBTQ Characters on 2012 Best of Lists\" target=\"_blank\">blogged<\/a> about LGBTQ books appearing on lists of the year&#8217;s best Young Adult literature and mentioned &#8220;several books with secondary or tertiary characters who are LGBTQ and aren\u2019t necessarily struggling with their sexuality . . . It\u2019s wonderful to have books about teens dealing with issues of sexuality and gender, but to me, it says more about the status of LGBTQ characters in YA fiction that there are so many books where the sexuality of gay, bisexual, transgendered, or otherwise queer characters isn\u2019t an issue.&#8221; Hear, hear!<sup class='footnote'><a href='#fn-3321-2' id='fnref-3321-2' onclick='return fdfootnote_show(3321)'>2<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2013<\/strong> Remember the kerfuffle a couple of years ago when the Booker Prize judges decided to shortlist books based on &#8216;readability&#8217; rather than &#8216;literary quality&#8217;? Even though I don&#8217;t agree with all of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/commentisfree\/2011\/oct\/18\/booker-prize-readability-test-literature\" title=\"The Guardian: Jeanette Winterson - Booker Prize Readability No Test for Literature\" target=\"_blank\">Jeanette Winterson&#8217;s criteria<\/a> for determining whether a novel is Literature, I laughed out loud at this: &#8220;The most unreadable books I have read recently were Stephenie Meyer&#8217;s <em>Twilight<\/em> series.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2013<\/strong> I was also interested in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/books\/2005\/jun\/13\/orangeprizeforfiction2005.orangeprizeforfiction\" title=\"The Guardian: 'I acted like a man - and prepared for victory' by Lionel Shriver\" target=\"_blank\">this article<\/a> by Lionel Shriver about how women authors behave when shortlisted for literary awards, compared to men: &#8220;Any victory that translates into beating someone else makes women feel guilty.&#8221; Ms Shriver is impatient with such &#8216;girly&#8217; attitudes. When asked whether she was surprised that her novel <em>We Need To Talk About Kevin<\/em> had won the Orange Prize, this was her response: <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;No,&#8221; I said. And then I made a wrong answer worse by adding, &#8220;It&#8217;s a good book.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I wonder if her overt self-confidence, and the reactions of others to this, have more to do with her being a self-confident American living in self-deprecating Britain than her being an &#8216;ungirly&#8217; woman novelist. I&#8217;m also surprised that she believes that literary awards inevitably go to a &#8216;good book&#8217;.<sup class='footnote'><a href='#fn-3321-3' id='fnref-3321-3' onclick='return fdfootnote_show(3321)'>3<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2013<\/strong> There&#8217;s been a lot of discussion about <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.slj.com\/teacozy\/2013\/02\/24\/the-latest-on-new-adult-and-a-question\/\" title=\"Tea Cozy: The Latest on New Adult and a Question\" target=\"_blank\">New Adult books<\/a> lately, although I&#8217;m still trying to figure out what constitutes <a href=\"http:\/\/www.killyourdarlingsjournal.com\/2012\/07\/what-does-ya-mean-to-you-a-discussion-about-definition\/\" title=\"Kill Your Darlings: What Does YA Mean To You?
