{"id":4492,"date":"2015-07-19T20:44:21","date_gmt":"2015-07-19T10:44:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/michellecooper-writer.com\/blog\/?p=4492"},"modified":"2016-12-16T17:26:34","modified_gmt":"2016-12-16T06:26:34","slug":"the-years-of-grace-sport","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michellecooper-writer.com\/blog\/2015\/07\/the-years-of-grace-sport\/","title":{"rendered":"The Years of Grace: Sport"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Each section of <a href=\"http:\/\/michellecooper-writer.com\/blog\/2015\/06\/adventures-in-research-schoolgirls-in-the-1950s-and-1960s-part-two\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Years of Grace<\/em><\/a> begins with some verse, and the introduction to \u2018Sport\u2019 is the worst by far:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/michellecooper-writer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/sport.jpg\" alt=\"&#039;Sport&#039; by Anna Zinkeisen from &#039;The Years of Grace&#039;\" title=\"&#039;Sport&#039; by Anna Zinkeisen from &#039;The Years of Grace&#039;\" width=\"227\" height=\"192\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-4491\" \/><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Every girl ought<br \/>\nTo love sport<br \/>\nBut if she wants to be wise and adorable<br \/>\nand completely feminine<br \/>\nShe will let meniwin<br \/>\nALWAYS\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Apparently Fifties Man was so fragile that if he was ever <a href=\"http:\/\/tvtropes.org\/pmwiki\/pmwiki.php\/Main\/IWasBeatenByAGirl\" target=\"_blank\">Beaten By A Girl<\/a>, he\u2019d crumple into a heap.<\/p>\n<p>This section is the shortest in the book, partly because Noel Streatfeild admits she was always \u201cthe lowest-class rabbit at games\u201d, but mostly because there are only three sports in which Fifties Girl is allowed to participate: lawn tennis, horse riding and swimming. There\u2019s also golf, but \u201cin many parts of the British Isles it is such an expensive game that few can afford it\u201d, so I guess it\u2019s fair enough that Noel chose to omit it from the book. Of course, there\u2019s also \u2018Watching Sport With Your Brother And His Friends\u2019. Watching sport played by men, naturally. I spent the entire section desperately wanting to watch Fifties Man getting trounced by Serena Williams at Wimbledon.<\/p>\n<p>The next and final section of <em>The Years of Grace<\/em> is \u2018Careers\u2019. But what possible career could Fifties Girl be qualified to do, given that she spent her school years concentrating on being &#8220;well-groomed&#8221; and is forbidden from ever competing with a man? Chapter titles such as \u2018You Might Be A Secretary\u2019 and \u2018Shop-Keeping\u2019 give some indication, although \u2018On Her Majesty\u2019s Service\u2019 looks intriguing. The Foreign Office? MI5?
