Also at Radio National, there\u2019s an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/radionational\/programs\/booksandarts\/iris-and-the-tiger\/7188468\" target=\"_blank\">interview with Leanne Hall<\/a> about <em><a href=\"http:\/\/michellecooper-writer.com\/blog\/2016\/03\/iris-and-the-tiger-by-leanne-hall\/\">Iris and the Tiger<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211;<\/strong> I liked <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/celebritynews\/12003384\/Children-who-inspired-Enid-Blytons-Famous-Five-book-covers-are-revealed.html\" target=\"_blank\">this article<\/a> about Mary Gernat\u2019s lovely cover art for the 1960s editions of the <em>Famous Five<\/em> books \u2013 the artist used her four sons and the family dog, Patch, as models for her sketches and watercolours.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211;<\/strong> Here\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/sjaejoneswriter.tumblr.com\/post\/132248577248\/the-hogwarts-house-matrix\" target=\"_blank\">an interesting attempt<\/a> to sort into Hogwarts Houses by asking two questions: Are you governed by morality or ethics, and do you derive satisfaction from internal or external validation? (As always, I get thrown straight into Ravenclaw.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211;<\/strong> A recent BBC poll of non-British critics about the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/culture\/story\/20151204-the-100-greatest-british-novels\" target=\"_blank\">greatest British novels of all time<\/a> came up with a list in which <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/culture\/story\/20151204-are-britains-best-writers-women\" target=\"_blank\">women writers dominated<\/a> the top ten and made up half of the top fifty. As I\u2019d only read fifty-five of the books, I\u2019ve added a few titles to my To Read list, although I think I can live quite happily without <em>Lucky Jim<\/em> and the two listed D H Lawrence novels.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211;<\/strong> I feel I\u2019ve read a few too many of <a href=\"http:\/\/wondermark.com\/1k74\/\" target=\"_blank\">these type of novels<\/a> lately (\u201cI\u2019m going to write a story about a character who feels the way <strong>I<\/strong> feel! Middle class, educated, with seemingly every advantage, but who still feels aimless and dissatisfied \u2026 Someone with <strong>my<\/strong> lived experience will be able to shine a penetrating dramatic light on the problems that arise when you don\u2019t really have other problems.\u201d)<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211;<\/strong> In happier news, the new(ish) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.childrenslaureate.org.au\/laureates\/leigh-hobbs\/\" target=\"_blank\">Australian children\u2019s laureate<\/a> is Leigh Hobbs, and hooray, he has a new Mr Chicken book out \u2013 <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/childrens-books-site\/gallery\/2016\/feb\/09\/australian-illustrated-childrens-books\" target=\"_blank\">Mr Chicken Lands on London<\/a><\/em>!<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8211;<\/em> If you happen to be in London (with Mr Chicken) and are worried about air quality \u2013 fear not, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2016-03-16\/pigeon-air-patrol:-the-latest-bid-to-combat-london-air-pollution\/7250524\" target=\"_blank\">Pigeon Air Patrol<\/a> is on the case. The pigeons, equipped with tiny backpacks, measure nitrogen dioxide, ozone and other volatile compounds and send the results to Plume Labs for analysis. Londoners can request a reading for their particular location (by sending a tweet, of course). The patrol team includes \u201cCoco, the \u2018maverick\u2019, Julius, the \u2018hipster\u2019, and Norbert \u2014 the \u2018intellectual\u2019\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211;<\/strong> Finally, in important cephalopod news, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2016-03-06\/octopus-caspar-the-friendly-ghost-spottedi-n-the-pacific\/7224226\" target=\"_blank\">a previously unknown species<\/a> of milky-white octopus has been spotted four kilometres below the surface of the Pacific Ocean. The octopus is currently nicknamed \u2018Caspar the Friendly Ghost\u2019. It joins another a new species, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2015-06-18\/octopus-so-cute-scientists-want-to-name-it-adorabilis\/6555062\" target=\"_blank\">tiny orange octopus<\/a> discovered last year that scientists would like to name <em>Opisthoteuthis adorabilis<\/em> because it is just <em>so adorable<\/em>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8211; Rivers of London fans, here\u2019s a good interview with Ben Aaronovitch at Radio National (although, beware, it contains big plot spoilers for the whole series).
