I don\u2019t think any writer is.\u2019 As Joanne Harris<\/a> said, \u2018Not only is Banville\u2019s claim ludicrous, it reinforces the myth that women can\u2019t be Proper Writers because of all the Caring they have to do.\u2019 I especially liked Julian Gough\u2019s response<\/a> in The Irish Times<\/em>, which discusses the \u2018historical cultural catastrophe\u2019 that bent many Irish men \u2018brutally out of shape\u2019 but expresses hope about the new generation of male writers.<\/p>\n

–<\/strong> I also enjoyed this article<\/a> by Matthew Gallaway, in which six writers discuss book covers and blurbs in an very entertaining fashion, and this short piece<\/a> by Christie Nieman on the joys of \u2018quiet\u2019 Young Adult novels.<\/p>\n

–<\/strong> In more depressing news, Stealing Books in the Age of Self-Publishing<\/em><\/a> explains that \u201cin the world of self-publishing, where anyone can put a document on Amazon and call it a book, many writers are seeing their work being appropriated without their permission\u201d, with enterprising plagiarists getting rich and escaping punishment. And even if you don\u2019t get plagiarised, there are plenty of other \u201cspiky little soul-destroying aspects of the business\u201d of literature, says Krissy Kneen, who is suffering from Mid-Career Malaise<\/a>.<\/p>\n
